1st ever Red Bull Flugtag 2012 in Singapore!

| |
Hi Huneybees,

I wonder how it feels to be driving a Red Bull Mini around town?
"Welcome onboard Red Bull Air. Please take your seat, fasten your seat belt securely and we are ready for take off!"

Yipee! Finally Singapore got to see the amazing Flugtag action! (See here to understand more about Flugtag) Well, it's always something I see on the news and never caught the first ever Red Bull Flugtag 2012 Singapore LIVE. It's so amazing to see people build these huge machines and at the end of the day fly it off to see who goes the furthest! It's like the super grown up version of throwing paper planes...

Since the first Red Bull Flugtag took place in Vienna, Austria, in 1992, more than 100 Flugtag events have been held around the globe, attracting up to 300,000 spectators for a single event.

It was a mighty hot day, but the weather didn't keep us away. We were excited and strolled along the whole Siloso Beach to the end, along the way were the super duper cute Red Bull MINI Coopers. We just kept taking photos. Hehehehe...

The Red Bull Flugtag teams spent weeks toiling over their man-made aircrafts in an attempt to put Singapore on the world map for creativity and on 28th October, Siloso Beach Sentosa saw some of the island’s wackiest human-powered flying crafts take off a 6 meter ramp into the lagoon.

Towards the end of the beach, we saw huge hangers housing the 38 Flugtags. There were a total of 38 teams (of 4 members per team), amidst cheers from a 35,000 strong crowd. Eager spectators filled Siloso Beach to its capacity as early as 11 am and were treated to views of the crafts on the pit lane preparing for the first take-off at 12 noon.

Nearly a quarter of the teams were inspired by local flair including Team Flurry Express and their MRT cabin, Team ERP with their flying ERP gantry. Local delights such as Chilli Crabs, Durians, Kueh Lapis and Char Siew Pows also took the skies, albeit briefly, before making a huge splash in the water below.

When I saw The Chickmobile. I really wonder how is the "pilot" gona see?

The Stealth Budget Airline Team

Java Express Team

Coco Loco Team

The Adventures of Flouride Man & the Cavity Creeps Team

Serial Flyers Team
Mega Aero Zord Team
Go! Go! Power Rangers!!!
The team that really caught my attention would have to be the "Mega Aero Zord". Power Rangers was a kids program I had to watch everyday and it left a huge impression on me. However, I must say the plenty display of male crossing dressing as females, was super eye-catching and adds on to the fun event.

501st Legion Singapore Garrison Team
STAR WARS!!! My hubby would have loved to ride in the Imperial Star Destroyer.

Pengcraft 2000 Team
Flask ML Pop Team
Kings of Fruit Team

Maxus Flock of Flyers Team
Super Sevens Team
Team Anvil
The BBFL team that's inspired by Hansel & Gretel and movie - UP.
Now, this is one craft that has the loudest applause and the greatest cheers! Presenting to you, the ERP Team.

Here's a video done by Malcolm Sunny.

At 12 noon, the 1st Red Bull Flugtag Singapore 2012 began! The judging panel consisted of 7 notable public figures - Paul Foster, Georgina Chang, Aide Iskandar, Rosalyn Lee, Felix Huang, Bobby Tonelli and Dee Kosh. They judged each teams based on creativity, showmanship and of course flight distance.

Also, The Muttons - Justin Ang and Vernon A from 987FM were the hosts.

Are you ready for the action? I must say most of the aircrafts didn't fly too far, but it was fun when amongst the crowd, we were all guessing how far they can go...

The Chick Mobile was the first to go and every team had to do a little performance number, leaving an impression, before the team pushes their aircrafts over the edge of the platform.

Splash!
The Stealth Budget Airline Team kicked in a twist before flying off. Not only did they have sey "air stewardesses", the plane flew backwards too!

More photos can be viewed here.

All the teams gave their best efforts and  it was Super Sevens, a team consisting of commercial pilots and an ex-air stewardess as the actual pilot, who walked away as champions.

SUMMARY OF PRIZE WINNERS:
1st Place: Team Super Sevens
2nd Place, Team Riff Raff Rubber Ruckus
3rd Place, Team Flurry Express
Prize for the Wackiest Team Performance: The Serial Flyers

The MINI Prize for the longest flight distance at Red Bull Flugtag Singapore was awarded to Team Amphibious Dragonfly Drone (Distance: 18.2m), and the winning pilot also walked away with an additional skydiving experience in Europe.

Yes! I was part of the Crazy 1st Red Bull Flugtag 2012 Singapore!
Malcolm did a coverage for SINGASPORTS and my photos were used for the post. Yipee!!
